Once the screws are out you should be able to lift up on the drain and pull it out. Apply a fresh ring of plumbers putty.
Use the putty knife to remove excess plumber s putty.
How to remove tub drain. Roll the putty between your hands until it is a long log that is about as thick as a pencil. Wrap the putty around the lip of the replacement drain basket. Hold the body of the stopper in one hand and turn the knob in a counterclockwise direction with the other to remove it.
The new drain needs to have a fresh clean area to seat on with a healthy amount of plumbers putty. Remove the screws from the faceplate. To remove one first set it in the open position.
Use a phillips or flathead screwdriver to rotate both of the screws counter clockwise to remove them from the faceplate. First clean all debris out of the area. Screw the new drain basket in by hand and tighten it with the pliers or drain wrench.
Set your tub to the open position if it has a visible stopper. Unscrew them slowly so that you can avoid dropping any components behind the plate into the tub or drain particularly if you have removed the metal grate. Impact wrench with a socket wrapped in duct tape tapering as you wrap it.
Hammer the socket inside the drain hole and remove it with the impact wrench. Remove any screws you see on the drain s faceplate. Scoop out a couple quarter size chunks of plumbers putty.
